Endodontics (root canal therapy) is a dental specialty that deals with the nerves of the teeth. When cavities are left untreated, they can become large and may penetrate to the nerve of the tooth becoming extremely painful. Once the nerve has become infected, the tooth cannot heal itself and requires either extraction or root canal therapy.
Root canal therapy is performed to clean out the infected pulp (nerve) of the tooth and disinfect the canals of the tooth. Each canal will be filled in to prevent further infection. A crown is usually recommended for restoring a tooth that has had root canal therapy.
